I was practicing last night and tried to learn the stick tricks he does, and I most certainly looked like a fool. He is so tight with it. Impossible.

Most stick tricks are simple once you learn the patterns. As you know, practice and timing are everything. This video is a little slow but it gives you a good idea of how a few simple tricks are done.

Another tip I wish I would have had when I was younger was to practice the double bass pedals using leg weights. Start out with 3-lb, then 5-lb and work your way up to 10-lb weights on each leg. If you can learn to work those pedals normally with that kind of weight on, when you take them off, you will be lightening fast.

Last tip Kyle is to keep it simple. The two greatest drummers I have ever known are Buddy Rich and Neil Peart. Instead of practicing stick tricks, try practicing basics. Watch this entire video but especially when the solo kicks in at 3:50 or so. No stick tricks or fancy kits, just pure drum awesomeness.
