I'd suggest it is bad/disengaged parenting and the lack of a cohesive family uni that is holding us back. The popularity of various cultural elements like this is just a symptom of the problem.
In a small way Chet I agree with you, but mostly I don't. I don't claim to know why, but here is why I mostly disagree. Many generations of parents have been distant, not just the last couple. It is well documented that peer pressure influences children more the family, and parents. To young impressionable kids, rich famous people that get whatever and do whatever they want is very appealing.
I see your point & it makes sense. Perhaps mine is a reaction to watching helicopter parents. If I could reword my previous statement I would mention that children are not challenged enough or allowed to fail attempting something on their own. Perhaps I should have said that the solution to our cultural problems could be found in families who are engaged and attempting help one another in life. Thanks for throwing that disagreement out there.
I also believe our society is a reflection of a civilization that has become a victim of its own past successes. There is a process that every civilization goes through and if I can find a link, I'll add it.
I agree with that statement, mostly:) the issue now however is that in this age of instantaneous dispersion of our ignorance, we may have to live with mistake for the rest of our/their lives. Most if not all online activities need monitoring. Which I guess would be prudent to add that with our increasing online knowledge and entertainment is leading to a portliness of children and a lack of activity. Also a lack of environment. When I was a kid we would play outside until nightfall, but the places I used to play in are buildings now, lucky for me I moved to a more woodsy area in later childhood, my kids however, play in the street, and in some local parks, but no woods nearby. Media, such a huge help, and at the same time it immobilizes us with fear.
