I have a friend who is suffering from cancer and needs to raise some money. He has offered to sell me his .300 AAC Blackout (right in the picture above) for $900. This would be my first venture into this type of weapon and admittedly, I have much to learn about them. I do know the ammo is expensive but I would not shoot this very often. Also, I can change the upper receiver assembly in the future and use a more reasonably priced round. My primary thought is whether it is a good deal because 1) I want to help my friend if I can and 2) it might make a nice addition to my expanding collection.
Would love to hear the opinions of gentlemen on this forum with more expertise in this area. Here is what I can tell you about the weapon.
- .300 AAC blackout
- Less than 100 rounds fired through it
- Aero Precision upper
- Anderson Mfg lower
- Yankee Hill free floated quad rail
- Palmetto State Armory lower parts kit
- BCM charging handle w/ extended release
- MaTech adjustable rear sight
- UTG front sight
- 20 + 30 round PMag included
- A2 style stock.

If I were in your shoes, and buying it didn't put me too much in debt, I would do it primarily for the two reasons you mentioned. It's a good caliber, the platform is versatile, & hopefully it feels decent in your hands? That said, I am moderatly knowledgeable at best, and not an expert. Best of luck to you and your friend.

A worthy cause and a worthy weapon. I wish I knew more of guns, but I would likely purchase it to assist the friend should it not be too great a burden financially. A quick search would make it seem a good price.

I have the 300 blackout and love the gun. The rounds are a bit expensive but a great caliber and pretty easy to get a hold of now. I bought it too with your same thought inside of changing it out if I needed to. Nikon makes its own 300 Blackout scope. You can also shoot Whisper rounds too as they are the same.
If it were me I would jump at it. ;-)

$900 sounds like a fair price, and is of course for a good cause. I would be a bit concerned about reliability since this is a home-built gun; it may have issues you'll have to troubleshoot. If you're a reloader, Blackout is only 5-10¢ a round more expensive than .223. You can repurpose .223 brass by cutting off the neck and reshaping it with the loading dies. There are videos of this on YouTube.

Thanks for the reload tip. Not currently reloading but have thought about it for years. They friend I am buying it from has built numerous guns and is a stickler for details and performance so I feel a little better about it being custom. But you are right, if it was someone I did not know, that would certainly be something to watch for. Thanks for the feedback.

A blackout is on my wish list, but I haven't gotten around to buying one yet. I've been thinking about it for years, wondering if it was just a fad, but it's looking like it's here to stay. I did shoot one suppressed a couple years ago. That was fun ;-)

That's a reasonable price for that weapon. Personally, I would shoot for the $700 range if buying used, but you're helping a friend out...and I feel that is noble, and $900 is surely what that weapon is worth. .300 blackout is expensive/harder to find, but if you ever intend to reload your own ammo this can be overcome. Bottom line, that's a fine weapon, and you are right in the fact that you could buy another upper to shoot .223/5.56. You could even just change the barrel for under $200 and have that same option, even selling the .300 barrel to recoup costs as they are popular right now with AR enthusiasts.

I don't know much about the gun but if it were my friend and I could swing it, I'd give him $1000 with the option to buy back when the time is right. Consider it a temporary big boy toy.

It's a fair deal. There are some parts I would replace if I wanted the rifle for hard use, but that could be done over time without significant cost. Do you know anything about the bolt?

I do not know anything about the bolt but knowing my friend's affinity for quality parts, my guess is that it may be a decent one. I will be sure to ask him. The gun will not get hard use. In fact, it will spend most of its days in my safe only to be shot for fun on occasion. At least until I get enough land to use it in a greater capacity. Thanks for the insight and feedback!

And for what it's worth, my primary weapon is built on an Anderson lower, with YHM rails. It gets the job done. I'm currently worked on a 300BLK build for hunting.

I'm currently building an AR so I can tell you a complete 300 Blackout package for $900 is an outstanding deal. You'll also be helping a friend. I'd like to bring up the Idea of a Suppressor as well. Depending on restrictions where you live of course. shooting subsonic 300 Blackout rounds through a suppressed system is quite enjoyable. Quieter than most rounds of that platform
