I have to admit, I'm a huge fan of Van Halen's late 70s early 80s stuff and damn it, they sound pretty good for a bunch of 60 year olds.

I was fortunate enough to see VH twice. The first time was on the Fair Warning tour in 1981. Then again during the 1984 tour. Other than Pink Floyd, they were hands down the best concerts I have been too. Never was a big Van Hagar fan.

You sir, are a lucky man. It got me thinking that 1981 must have been like the best time to see them. I love the Fair Warning album, so I did some googling and found this: http://www.vhnd.com/2009/03/19/the-van-halen-holy-grail/

From the article: "Some fans consider the Fair Warning tour as the pinnacle of Van Halen’s powers, based on what precious little footage has circulated from the David Lee Roth era."

Fair Warning is one of my favorite VH albums. And yes, the show in '81 was mind boggling. The band was in its peak around that time and DLR was never better. He got the crowd worked up into a frenzy. I think every girl in the first three rows threw their bra on stage for him.

Side note: While we were standing in line outside the Spectrum in Philadelphia for the Fair Warning show, a local radio station flew over in a helicopter and dropped flyers for an upcoming show at the Tower Theater in downtown Philly. The bands were Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. This was before Bruce Dickinson joined Iron Maiden and not many people had heard of them yet. I went to that show as well. The venue only seated like 3,000 people. Awesome show and possibly the loudest I have ever been to.

Wow man, that's a cool story. Diamond Dave is the absolute best. It just wasn't the same cool vibe with hagar. I can only imagine what that show would have been like. Also, it's weird to think that there was a time when people had never heard of bands like Iron Maiden.
