We homeschool our children. We built a homeschool room into our house. My own family have been the biggest opponents to our decision. Friends have been concerned that our kids would end up like those other 'weird' kids. Although when asked the questions who the 'weird' homeschooled kids they have met lately then have no answer.

We homeschool as well. We count be happier with how our children have turned out so far.

"Socialization" huh, let see. We have Tae Kwon Do, Dance classes, COOP, Trail Life, Field trips, Soccer, Group Music lessons, Church and I am sure I am forgetting something. I don't think we have time for this "socialization" thing people keep saying our kids are missing.

Perfectly stated. To take one further step, based on the author's points, I wonder if this question about "socialization" is a strong indicator of the success of the program of state education. A person who has been conditioned to the thinking and behavior he was taught in this state-sponsored system might be genuinely worried about someone else who won't receive the same conditioning. So, actually, they are asking how someone could function without the "sense of conformity and standardization among the students and ... a fixed reaction to arbitrary authority" that public education creates. "Since I can't think for myself, how could anyone else?"

I haven't read the article yet, but we homeschool, and my response to anyone worrying about our kids "turning out like weird homeschoolers" is to slather the sarcasm on so thick it can't be mistaken, and say "right, because there definitely aren't any weird kids in public school."
