As an avid fan of the Amazon Echo, I would absolutely pay the $5/month to be able to play whatever tunes I wanted on the Echo. As it stands, asking Alexa to play a song or an album is at best a 50/50 proposition.

I have never used the Echo but I would love to see a demo in person.

We use Sonos in our house. Expensive to purchase up front but they sound fantastic. And we can connect all of our streaming music services (including Amazon) to them.

Sonos is awesome and I'm a fan of their stuff. If I could afford it, I would absolutely outfit my house with Sonos speakers all over the place, but damn that would cost a lot of money. I'm seeing a lot of new competitors in the WiFi speaker category, so I'm hoping something less expensive comes out in the near future.

Echo is more of a novelty thing and plays music but that's really only a part of what it does. I was able to pick one up before they were officially released at a discounted price, so I've been using it since it came out basically. It is the first voice responding gadget that really nailed it in my opinion. They spent a lot of time engineering the hardware and software and it shows. There's something about sitting in your living room and saying "Hey Alexa, play Smooth by Santana" and then immediately hearing it — or asking what is on your calendar, or getting the forecast for the day. You can also control any home automation stuff you might have with it as well.

At the end of the day, Echo is more fun than useful but I've really enjoyed having one around the house.
