I was in Lancaster a couple years ago and a guy rolled by in a completely "diamond-plated" buggy. It blew my mind. I asked the guy running the shop what that was about and why the furniture they were selling was made from the plasticized "wood"? He basically said there are conservative and liberal Amish just like anyone else. He pointed out the solar panels and the diesel generator on the wood shop across the street. He then said the elders figured quite a while back that if they were going to be used as a tourist attraction then they should reap as much of the incoming funds as possible. In order to do that, they'd have to catch up with the times. It really left me disillusioned and saddened, to be honest.
