This is a little bit of a departure for the Essential Craftsman — a safety video. I have to say it's well worth the 14 minutes to watch this though.

And on the way down don't miss the last step. I know someone who has done that twice (and is now banned from using ladders) and ended up with the back of this head cracked open.

    Here is a ladder don't:
Don't erect your folding ladder in top of your minivan to reach up and cut a broken limb off a tree.

I watched this unfold across the street from me, a few years ago, right up to the point the guy was about to climb up the minivan, at which point I brought over my 24' extension ladder. I have never seen a more grateful expression than his wife's.

Wow, well done sir. These seemingly innocuous tools have a way of becoming quite dangerous when human beings get involved with them. I have been guilty of some major lapses in judgement around tools myself. Something to always be mindful of. That said, putting a ladder on top of a minivan is not something I would ever seriously entertain. Well, I guess it depends on how badly I needed to get up into that tree...

Yeah, I think we all have moments of stupidity, no worthwile project is without some level of risk.

I'll be honset, I stayed around just long enough to make sure he leaned the ladder against the tree trunk, and not on the outside end of the branch he was trying to cut. Then I left, afraid of what else I might see.

Though affable, he wasn't my favorite neighbor
