Huh, I would have guessed closet as well, but aleger seems to be right. I found the link to more pictures http://weburbanist.com/2008/04/28/20-brilliant-bookcase-and-bookshelf-designs-creative-modular-and-unique-urban-furniture/. It looks like a converted attic maybe? I'm just taking a stab at why they're so steep.
