James Montgomery Beck discovered the New World on the 400th anniversiary of columbus' epochal voyage, liked it, and began almost immediately to lead an exceptionally interesting life. He was born in Philadelphia, son of the eminent lawyer, James M. Beck, who was solicitor general of the united states during the Coolidge administration.

Mr. Beck is a graduate of Princeton University, class of 1914, & was touring Europe when WW I exploded. His first job was as a cub reporter on the New York Times at $15 a week. He took time out to accompany his father to England as guest of the Pilgrim's Society. Upon returning, he gave up newspaper work & tried banking. In this role he was once instructed to carry a bag with "whatever they put in it" from the clearing house to the bank. The bag contained $14,000,000 in cash!

After serving as a first lieutenant with the American Expeditionary force, Mr. Beck became musical director of the European affiliate of the Victor Talking Machine Company. He was an executive of Western Electric when the movies changed to sound, & later became sole representative of movie "czar" Will Hays in England. In these positions, he hobnobbed with outstanding personages of two worlds. Now retired, Mr. Beck lives in Newport, Rhode Island, with his wife & young son, & is the founder & President of the Newport Branch of the English-Speaking Union of the U.S.
