The turtleneck has been around since the late 19th century when they were primarily worn by navy sailors, officers and athletes. By the 20th century they became more associated with academics, intellectuals, artists and philosophers. This fashion staple has certainly withstood the test of time and is now worn by everyone. In fact historical and style icons like Steve Jobs, Robert Redford, Sean Connery, Steve McQueen and all of The Beatles were known to embrace turtleneck shirts.
