During WWI, dogs were used extensively as scouts, sentries, messengers, and rescuers. A German Red Cross dog won the Iron Cross for rescuing a wounded officer stranded in no-man's land on the Russian Front. Under heavy fire, the severely injured dog dragged the man to safety.
