NEW YORK CITY’S IRISH INITIATED THEIR CELEBRATION AT THE CROWN & THISTLE TAVERN IN 1756. GENERAL GEORGE WASHINGTON, COMMANDER OF A LARGE NUMBER OF IRISH VOLUNTEERS, GAVE THEM A DAY OFF ON MARCH 17, 1780.
