When I was WAY out in the countryside in Ukraine I was just expecting to see deer coming out to eat in the fields in the evening (like I'd always see when I was in Montana). I was told they were pretty much non-existent.

In that area, they may have been too heavily hunted for subsistence. The Czechs were probably never in such dire need.
