This is a very cool chart. I've always felt that range is an underappreciated measure of vocal ability. So it was surprising to see the results and compare them to my own opinions on who is a great singer. For instance I was surprised that Freddie Mercury's recorded range wasn't greater (Although it is still very impressive). And look toward the bottom of the chart and you'll find Karen Carpenter at a very narrow range. Both of those artists were crystal clear in their delivery though. Bottom line is that range, no matter how high or low, is just another measure, not THE measure. Sure Mariah can hit the high notes, but I'd rather listen to Annie Lennox or Stevie Nicks all day long.
I'd be curious to see where Julie Andrews circa Mary Poppins (because I have kids) & Sound of Music (because I have a wife...but it's grown on me and I like it now) would measure up.
Wow. That's something I didn't think of, but you're right. Julie Andrews was/is incredible. Come to think of it, I'd like to see an "all time" chart like this going back through some really old recordings through today.
Of course, "range" isn't necessarily an indicator of talent and/or being one of the best/greats. What about Janice Joplin? Probably not the greatest range but nobody sang with more soul.
