    Wouldn't it be easier just to weld it together? I mean, if he has that sort of shop, surely a $600 Lincoln welder isn't a crazy investment.

      This is a good point, but I think the idea was something akin to the woodworkers who still use hand tools over power tools in certain situations. Many woodworkers use a powered router over a manual one every time, but some use the old school one for certain projects or tasks because it is more gratifying or suited towards that particular project. Some people still four square a board without a jointer (even though lots of people probably tell them they are crazy!).

        But I could have burned that thing together in less than 10 minutes. Which is less time than he spent drilling holes.
