Joss Whedon wrote and directed this, so it's not the least bit surprisng that he has a woman who kicks ass in it. Buffy and Faith (Buffy TVS), River (Firefly/Serenity) and Echo (The Dollhouse) all kicked ass and looked good while doing it!
