For anyone who is a true beginner, I recommended first learning G, C, A, D, Am and Em. With those six basic chords, you can learn to play thousands upon thousands of songs and wow friends and family. Once you are comfortable with those, begin to experiment with others including barre chords. But also focus on the pick hand for that is where style develops and often makes you playing unique. Just my two cents. Regardless of how you do it, I applaud anyone who attempts to learn to play any musical instrument. It is one of life's simple pleasures.
