Pin it! He says it should only be flown at half staff for Americans who have given the ultimate sacrifice. The sheriff goes on to say it should only be flown at half staff at the U.S. embassy in South Africa. I tend to agree with him.

I have to admit, I have been doing some reading on ole Mandela.....the guy was a freaking terrorist. Not the "freedom fighter" everyone says he was. I mean, the guy was pals with Moammar Gadhafi and apparently was not immune to the corruption that comes from being in power.

I was thinking about this the other day. It would be appropriate to hang flags at half staff at places such as the UN, White House, State Department, etc. as a gesture or respect to an extremely influential world leader. Small town fire department though? Not so much.
Also of interest, there is no mandate requiring that flags be lowered, however it is considered a, "moral obligation" to follow the guidelines set out by the federal government.
