Let me save you a minor disappointment. From the article:
"While Eichar prefers to save the details for those who read the book, suffice to say that his theory involves a particular type of repetitive wind event (one that could be produced by the topography of Dead Mountain), which in turn might have triggered panic-inducing infrasound."
That's as close to the explanation as you'll get in this article. Still and interesting read but no answers. Rats.

Read this book, could not put it down. Eichar's theory fits the evidence all but perfectly, least how I see it.
Love the feel of the story and the book. Very ominous...
