It sounds like ASL is a little like court reporting; individual nuance causes misreadings and only the actual signer can accurately translate their own message.
My sister-in-law is hearing impaired, and you're right: You never know what kind of interpreter you're going to get. From what I understand it's nice to have an interpreter who's expressive (like this guy), like it would be to have a dynamic speaker (unlike the guy giving the conference).
