Well, if you carry a pistol, which is item #14 that every man should carry, you're checking your bag anyway, so you can throw your knife and other stuff in. :)
As to insurance cards, proof of vehicle insurance, etc. I just take a picture of them with my phone.

sorry but knives when out the window long ago as someone that travels via air. I have had too many taken by the TSA.

Yeah, a definite bummer there. I travel a lot too, and unless I'm checking a bag, the knife stays at home.
