I never use a chromebook before, Is it something I should consider? I mainly use my laptop to do online things such as email, browsing and also I use lots of spreadsheets. Both Google sheets and regular excel. Should I give chromebook a shot?

It depends. It's not about what you "mainly do" but rather about what you need it do, even if only every now and then. A Chromebook will have sever limitations in what it can do, but if you can live within those limitations they can be a good value.

If you do get one, and decide you need a bit more flexibility, it is possible to install Linux on a Chromebook. There are a couple of flavours designed specifically for Chromebooks, such as Chrubuntu and Crouton.

Either way though, if you use a lot of Excel, you may run into issues. A lot of that functionality is present in Google Docs, and in various open source office suites (like Libre Office), but there are differences that could cause some issues. Honestly, for doing a lot of stuff in Office, I would opt for a Windows machine every time.
