Kansas: Joe's Kansas City all the way. That said, there is one thing that they missed on. While the Z-Man sandwich is outstanding and worth mentioning, the burnt ends are otherworldly. They only serve them a few days of the week, and it is a religious experience.
I'm partial to 'Bama's Big Bob Gibson. However, Kansas is one of seven states I have yet to visit (I'm in Green Bay , WI). So I'll defer to you and make a point of getting there someday soon.
Have not been to Joe's yet. Rosedales is in an Industrial park next to nothing but some concrete factory. Have no idea how they picked the location. Great ribs and unique sauce that is not sweet/thick. http://www.rosedalebarbeque.com/index.php
They chose Louie Muellers over Franklins because its been around longer and there is no line. That's pathetic reasoning. Franklins is the best in Texas however Louie Muellers is definitely in the top 5.
Need to try that when I am out that way. Lexington is only 15 minute from where I am..partial and also first BBQ ever to win James Beard award and serve to Pres Reagan.
Not being a fan of Eastern Carolina BBQ, I can't really agree. Unfortunately as I'm about to move back there I'll be in desperate need of a BBQ option that isn't vinegar based. First time I went to Wilber's, I asked for some sauce. The waitress looked at me like I was crazy and said they didn't have sauce...didn't go well from there. I'd love some suggestions from those who know the area well.
Fair enough. Wet or dry. Vinegar or brown sugar. We all have our preferences. We used to practically drink Tabasco sauce there. Drowned everything in it.
Sorry, I wasn't meaning to knock your tastes at all. I will give it another shot this time and I'll try your tobacco suggestion. I'm more of a beef guy than a pork guy and in a town that almost worships pork like Hindus worship cows...I just learned to keep my mouth shut. A lesson that has obviously worn off. I don't know how long ago you were there, but if you are aware of some alternative options, I'd be happy to check them out. I'd rather not forgo BBQ altogether for two years.

My first duty station was Seymour-Johnson AFB in Goldsboro. We ate at Wilber's quite a bit. Great BBQ.
