Growing up in a good Christian home, I remember hearing conversations about all of this. I also remember how the news would push the narrative. I remember the movie.
Realistically I think it should have been a clarion call for all of us that the days of trusting the news were over. Today we have moral panics about vaccines, organic foods, overuse of technology, and global warming. The "preachers" may be different but the mechanics are the same.
Growing up in a good Christian home and being a Christian as well, I couldn't connect the dots between the so-called "path to satanism" with the nerds who were playing D&D. All I saw was a bunch of kids who were enthralled with a game the way I was enthralled with reading. Yes, the nerds found their "place" and some became obsessed (see kids and Pokemon a generation later) but I never saw any of them slaughter goats or virgins. Mainly they just moved from all night Risk games to all night D&D games.
