I first listened to 2112 in the late 70s as a pre-teen. At that time, I was just starting to play the drums. This album changed everything for me, particularly how I approached music and my ability to play it. It also summed up the angst of being that age and being a little different than the other kids. I thought this quote nailed it on the head.
"When I listen to 2112 now, it reminds me of those restless years of figuring out how to negotiate the world and the people in it. Just as I can look back and see what a breakthrough 2112 was for Rush, I can remember being that naïve kid about to make a few breakthroughs himself. The biggest lesson that 2112 imparted was that you can improve yourself without compromising your true nature."

Wait, you learned to play the drums by listening to Rush? Man, that's a tough row to hoe.

Not exactly. I was learning to play by ear using mostly classic rock tunes which are much easier. After hearing 2112, I realized there was a whole other world out there. I became addicted to prog rock bands and adapted my style (as best I could) to learn how to play that way. Over the years, I slowly got better at it. By the time I reached high school, I was fairly proficient at playing a great deal of Rush songs. So, it took time...and a LOT of practice.
