What I've found with bands from the 70's and 80's is they can't sing anymore. They still have the technical chops but can't hold a note.
U2, Bono in particular, has changed his singing style and the arrangements subtlety over the years. I can't think of a song he's "ruined" because of his voice. That shows dedication to the art. It's why, 30 years on, I'm still a fan and will watch the concert videos and someday I'll see them again live. It's been a long time since 1987 and the L.A. Coliseum.
